Protecting Your Fan Forced Gas Geyser During Freezing Conditions

Fan forced geysers are built to function efficiently in freezing conditions, relying on electricity to perform their antifreeze functions. However, if the power is interrupted, these units cannot protect themselves from freezing. Consequently, damage caused by power interruptions in freezing temperatures is not covered under warranty. If you expect temperatures to drop to -5 degrees Celsius or lower, it is crucial to take precautions to safeguard your geyser

What Happens When It Freezes

Expansion of Water: When water freezes, it expands. This can cause pipes, internal components, and the heat exchanger to crack or burst.

Blockage: Frozen water can block the flow, preventing the geyser from functioning and potentially causing pressure buildup.

Damage to Heating Elements: The heating elements or coils can be damaged if they attempt to heat the frozen water, leading to overheating and failure.

Leaks: Once the ice thaws, the cracked or burst components can cause water leaks, leading to further damage and potential flooding.

Safeguards Against Freezing

Antifreeze Valve: We highly recommend that you install an antifreeze valve that automatically releases water when temperatures drop too low, preventing the internal components from freezing.

Insulation: Proper insulation of the unit and pipes can help protect against freezing. Insulating jackets or pipe insulation can be used.

Location: Installing the geyser in a location that is less exposed to freezing temperatures, can prevent freezing. Regular Maintenance: Regularly checking and maintaining the unit can help ensure that freeze protection features are working correctly.

Preventative Measures

Backup Power Supply: In areas prone to power outages, having a backup power supply (like a generator/ intverter or UPS battery back-up) can ensure that the freeze protection systems continue to operate during a power cut.

Drain the System: If the unit will be unused for an extended period in freezing conditions, it’s advisable to drain it completely to prevent water from freezing inside.

By taking these precautions, you can help ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your fan forced geyser during the coldest months.
