Protecting Your Gas Geyser in Freezing Conditions

If you own a gas geyser and live in an area where temperatures drop below freezing during winter, it’s essential to protect your system from potential damage caused by freezing water. When water freezes, it expands, increasing pressure that can harm your gas geyser and other pipes and appliances in your home.

Over Pressurisation Valve (OPV)

Fortunately, gas geysers are equipped with an Over Pressurisation Valve (OPV) to manage this risk. The OPV allows expanding water to be released from the bottom of the gas geyser, preventing damage.

How to Set Your OPV:

1. Locate the Grubscrew: Slowly unscrew the grubscrew until water starts to drip.
2. Adjust Accordingly:
   Diaphragm Activated Gas Geysers: Turn back the grubscrew 1.5 revolutions.
   Low Pressure & Constant Temperature Gas Geysers: Turn back the grubscrew 1 revolution.

Antifreeze Valve Installation

To provide additional protection for your gas geyser and plumbing system, consider installing an Antifreeze Valve. This valve prevents freezing in water pipes and appliances upstream of the valve, safeguarding water storages, gas geysers, pipes, solar, and irrigation systems from damage caused by expanding freezing water.

How the Antifreeze Valve Works:

• Activation Temperature: When the water temperature drops below 8°C, the valve automatically opens, allowing a small amount of water to flow toward the drain. This continuous inflow of water keeps the water inside the pipes from freezing.
• Deactivation Temperature: The valve shuts off when the water temperature rises above 8°C or comes into contact with warmer water.

Additional Precautions

To further prevent other indoor or outdoor pipes from getting damaged due to expanding freezing water, simply open a tap to a slight drip. This keeps the ground water moving through the pipes, which is generally warmer.

Tip: Remember to recycle the water that drips out to avoid waste.

By taking these precautions and installing additional protective measures, you can ensure your gas geyser and plumbing system remain protected during freezing temperatures.
